Vuk

Vuk is a Finnish-American, former one-woman band who recently expanded into a small orchestra of several people (although she still composes all the material herself.) Her debut album was released on the Finnish label Verdura Records in 2003, and she is currently working on new material for an album that will be released in the first half of 2007.

Her songs explore fictional landscapes: they roam through Sergio Leone deserts, gradually trickle down to a Port-au-Prince graveyard or carnival in Rio, and finally climb up again to a garden of glaciers God-knows-where.

She says she has "glided back and forth between deeper, murkier, experimentally musical tides and the clearer waters of bluesily gurgling rivers." First and foremost, she seeks to move and surprise her listeners. Her haunting and deeply emotional, mantra-like, envelope-pushing pop songs and esoteric harmonium requiems have evoked comparisons to artists like PJ Harvey and Björk.
